About Movie Gallery, Inc.
Founded in 1985, Movie Gallery operated as a home entertainment specialty retailer that rented and sold DVDs, video games, and related equipment. Most stores were located in small towns in rural areas. Stores stocked thousands of movies and hundreds of video games on its shelves. Stores also sold blank cassettes, video cleaning equipment, memorabilia, snacks, and merchandise. Despite many people thinking the video rental business was a fad in the 1980s, the founders of Movie Gallery saw an open market that was going to boom. At its peak as the nation’s third largest video store, the company operated 4,800 stores and employed approximately 19,100 employees.
Movie Gallery also operated as Hollywood Entertainment Corporation, Hollywood Video, Moovies Inc. and Video Update Inc.
The former headquarters of Movie Gallery was located in Wilsonville, OR.
