Oak Point Partners acquired the remnant assets of the Service Merchandise Company, Inc., et al., Bankruptcy Estate in December 2008.
On March 27, 1999, Service Merchandise Company, Inc. and its related entities (“Service Merchandise”) filed a chapter 11 petition in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, assigned Case No. 99-02649. Thereafter, Service Merchandise confirmed a liquidating plan and a Plan Administrator was appointed to liquidate the estate’s assets.

Service Merchandise was a national retailer of fine jewelry, housewares, small appliances, home electronics, and other goods with a major catalog operation. The company was the nation’s leading catalog-showroom retailer in the 1970s. The catalogs, more than 600 pages and containing 8,500+ items, would be distributed to over 16 million household each fall. The company was also a prominent sponsor of many daytime TV game shows. At its peak, Service Merchandise operated over 400 stores in 37 states and employed 41,000 people.
