Who Owns Heilig-Meyers Remnant Assets?

Oak Point Partners acquired the remnant assets of the Heilig-Meyers Liquidation Trust in August 2010.

On August 16, 2000, Heilig-Meyers Company and its related entities (“Heilig-Meyers”) filed a chapter 11 petition in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, assigned Case No. 00-34533. Thereafter, a Chapter 11 plan was confirmed, which transferred the assets of Heilig-Meyers to the Heilig-Meyers Liquidation Trust.

About Heilig-Meyers

Founded in 1913, Heilig-Meyers sold furniture through it’s over 1,000 stores. By 1986, the company became the largest publicly traded home-furnishings retailer in the United States. In 1993, the company emerged as the country’s most profitable furniture retailer. Most stores were located in small cities within 25 miles of metropolitan markets. The company was a sponsor of a few NASCAR drivers as well. Over 80% of customers used Heilig-Meyers’ in-house credit program to pay for their furniture. Aggressive expansion in the early 1990s saw the company set goals of opening 50 stores a year. The company employed 7,700 people.

The former headquarters of Heilig-Meyers was located in Richmond, VA.
